Don't Die With Your Music Still In You
The World Needs What Only You Can Create
There’s a quote by Wayne Dyer that has stuck with me for years: “Don’t die with your music still in you.” I’ve mentioned this quote before in a past newsletter, but it's worth repeating. It’s a simple but powerful idea. We all have something inside us - our own music, our own art, our own genius - that the world is waiting to hear. But too often, fear, doubt, or the comfort of the familiar keeps us from ever sharing it.
Think of the songs you love, the ones that have shaped your life. Imagine if those artists had never put their work out into the world. What if Bob Dylan had stayed in a stable corporate job, never writing Blowin’ in the Wind or Like a Rolling Stone? What if Paul McCartney had never picked up a guitar (or bass to be more accurate)? What if Stevie Wonder had kept his voice to himself? The world would have been deprived of something extraordinary.
The same is true for you and me.
We often assume that greatness belongs to a select few - those with special talent, connections, or luck. But the truth is, we all have something unique to offer. Your “music” might not be a song. It might be a book you’ve been meaning to write, a business idea you’ve hesitated to launch, or a story only you can tell.
But here’s the catch: if you don’t share it, no one else will.
Too many people go through life holding back. They wait for the perfect moment, the perfect conditions, or the perfect version of themselves before they take action. But waiting for perfection is the enemy of progress. If Bob Dylan had waited until his voice was flawless, if McCartney had waited until he fully understood music theory, if any great artist had waited for permission, we’d never hear their work.
The Fear That Holds Us Back
So why do we hesitate? Fear of failure. Fear of judgment. Fear of stepping outside the comfort of what’s known.
I know this fear personally. When I first stepped up from being a drummer to lead vocalist for my band, I wasn’t sure if I had what it took. Singing lead was uncharted territory, and I questioned whether people would take me seriously. But I took the leap anyway. And what I discovered is what so many artists, creators, and entrepreneurs realize once they begin: the real failure would have been not trying at all.
We have to remind ourselves that the greatest loss isn’t rejection - it’s regret.
Your Music Matters More Than You Know
You might be thinking, But what if my work isn’t good enough? What if no one cares?
The truth is, you don’t get to decide how your work will impact others. You just have to put it out there.
The first time I produced a music video, I had no idea how it would be received. It was a risk - months of work, coordination, and effort. But that video ended up resonating with thousands of people. Had I never released it, those people would never have experienced it. And that’s the point: the world doesn’t just need more creators; it needs you - your unique perspective, your experiences, your art.
If you’ve been sitting on an idea, waiting for the “right time” to share your work, here are a few steps to help you take action:
Recognize Your Music – What is the thing you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t? Writing? Speaking? Teaching? Creating? Start by acknowledging what’s inside you.
Start Small, But Start – You don’t need to quit your job or upend your life overnight. Write one page of that book. Record one video. Share one idea. The key is to take the first step.
Silence the Inner Critic – That voice telling you you’re not good enough? It’s lying. Every successful creator started somewhere, often with doubt. Push past it.
Commit to Consistency – Talent grows through repetition. Whether it’s music, writing, or business, showing up consistently is what separates those who succeed from those who just dream about it.
Share Before You’re Ready – Don’t wait until your work is perfect. Put it out there, get feedback, and improve as you go. The world doesn’t need perfect - it needs real.
The World Needs Your Song
You have something inside you that no one else can create in quite the same way. Maybe it’s music. Maybe it’s art. Maybe it’s a message. But whatever it is, if you don’t put it out into the world, it will never exist.
So don’t wait. Don’t overthink. Don’t let fear keep you from sharing what only you can share.
Because the saddest thing wouldn’t be failing. The saddest thing would be never trying at all.
So go ahead. Play your song. Write your book. Start your business. Share your story.
Because the world is waiting to hear it.
Until next time,
Elliot
