Content Creation...And All That Jazz
How to Orchestrate a Consistent Social Media Strategy
Let me tell you something about jazz. It may sound like pure improvisation - and sometimes it is - but underneath the solos, the flourishes, and those wild trumpet lines is structure. There’s a chord progression. There’s a format. A framework. Without it, even the most talented musicians would drift into chaos. Jazz isn’t anything goes. It’s anything goes within the form.
And if you ask me, the same approach applies to content creation.
I know that sounds strange at first, but hear me out.
When I arrange music for my band, I don’t write out every note for every instrument. I lay down the melody, the chords, the song form, and maybe a few important background parts. That gives us a shared roadmap. Everyone could follow the structure, and then bring their own flavor, spontaneity, and creativity to the performance. That balance - structure and freedom - is the secret sauce.
Content creation works the same way. If you’re trying to show up consistently online, build a personal brand, or grow a business through social media, you can’t wing it every day. You can’t rely on pure inspiration. You need a system.
Structure Sets You Free
One of the biggest misconceptions about creative work is that it thrives on freedom alone. But in my experience, too much freedom can be paralyzing. The blank page, the blinking cursor, the endless scroll of other people’s content - it can all freeze you up.
What you really need is a structure. A framework. A rhythm.
This is something I lay out in my ebook, The Creator’s Playbook: A Music-Inspired Guide to Orchestrating Consistent Content Creation. And it’s worth mentioning here because it forms the backbone of any effective content strategy:
The Tuning Method – Discovering Your Unique Voice
Just like tuning your instrument before a performance, you need to align with your message, your purpose, and your tone. What do you want your audience to feel when they hear from you? What do you stand for?The Content Composition Framework
Think of this like writing a score. It’s the structure that helps you map out your content pillars, define your formats, and set the creative boundaries so your ideas have a place to land. The Practice & Performance Cycle – Consistency Without Burnout
Just like musicians rehearse before going live, creators need behind-the-scenes practice time. This includes batching content, repurposing, and preparing in advance so you can show up regularly without draining yourself. The Jam Session Method – Overcoming Creative Blocks
When you’re stuck, don’t force it. Jam. Try something messy, unpolished, or different. Let loose. Creativity flows when you lower the pressure and just start playing. The Conductor’s Role – Bringing It All Together
You’re the conductor of your brand. You’re guiding the flow, pacing, and energy. You decide how and when to show up, and how all the moving pieces - posts, videos, emails - come together into a cohesive performance.

The Risk of Playing Without a Chart
I’ve met so many brilliant creators who burn out fast. Why? Because they’re constantly reinventing the wheel. They post when they feel like it. They chase trends without tying them back to their core message. They treat their social media like a blank slate every time.
That’s like walking on stage with a group of musicians who have no idea what key you’re in, what song you’re playing, or how long the solo section is. Sure, it might work for one tune… but good luck sustaining that night after night.
When you have a system - a plan, a structure, a repeatable workflow - you reduce friction. You eliminate decision fatigue. You create space for spontaneity and creativity, instead of constantly reacting and scrambling.
My System (And How You Can Build Yours)
Here’s a peek behind the curtain of how I think about my own content creation:
Core Message: Helping people reinvent themselves and share their value through creativity, storytelling, and consistency.
Content Pillars: Personal branding, creator mindset, music/life metaphors, behind-the-scenes lessons, storytelling frameworks.
Cadence: Weekly newsletter (like this one), daily posts on LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), and Threads per week, with cross-posting images and reels to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube Shorts.
Templates: I keep swipe files of my post formats - frameworks for storytelling, carousel templates, hook formulas.
System: Each week, I brainstorm 3-5 ideas tied to my pillars. I batch-write when I can. I repurpose older content by giving it a new spin or visual.
You don’t need to copy my system, but you do need a system. One that fits your goals, your energy, and your audience.
Takeaway: Create Your Music-Inspired Content Strategy
Here are a few actionable steps you can take this week:
Tune up. Define your voice. What’s your message? What are you about?
Compose your framework. Choose your content pillars and post formats.
Set your rhythm. Decide how often you’ll post and create a repeatable cadence.
Jam weekly. Schedule unstructured time to play with ideas and explore.
Conduct with intention. Step back regularly and make sure everything is harmonizing toward your bigger goals.
Remember: the goal isn’t perfection. The goal is progress. And progress comes from showing up consistently, improvising within a structure, and sharing your message even when you’re not feeling "ready."
So go ahead. Build your chart. Find your groove. And start sharing your song with the world.
Until next week,
Elliot
